EU-Armenia Relations: Harnessing the Momentum

Online discussion in collaboration with Heinrich Boell Foundation Yerevan Office – South Caucasus Region Event Partner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIc5P-E-bXw On February 8, 2024, the Heinrich Boell Foundation Yerevan Office – South Caucasus Region, in collaboration with APRI Armenia, held an online discussion titled “EU-Armenia Relations: Harnessing the Momentum.” Armenia and the EU are experiencing an unprecedented momentum in their relations. In his address at the European Parliament in October 2023, Prime Minister Pashinyan stated that Armenia “is ready to be closer to the European Union, as much as the European Union considers it possible.” Yet, while the directions of closer cooperation are taking shape, a recent report published by APRI Armenia in cooperation with hbs Yerevan Office suggests that the EU and Armenia lack a longer-term strategic vision for their relationship. It also remains unclear whether the EU is willing and able to adequately respond to Armenia’s security needs – against the backdrop of the continuing risk of Azerbaijani aggression against Armenia and Armenia’s historical alliance with Russia.  Speakers: H.E. Dirk Schuebel, EU Special Envoy for the Eastern Partnership, European External Action Service H.E. Tigran Balayan, Ambassador, Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union Viola von Cramon, Member of the European Parliament Marie Dumoulin, Director, Wider Europe program, European Council on Foreign Relations Anahide Pilibossian, Vice President of Strategy and Development, APRI Armenia. Moderator: Sonja Schiffers, Director, Heinrich Böll Foundation Tbilisi Office – South Caucasus Region

Prospects and Challenges of Armenia–Germany Relations

Joint webinar with Candid Foundation Event Partner: https://vimeo.com/896100464?share=copy This year has seen an acceleration of Germany’s engagement with Armenia against the backdrop of the fallout of Nagorno-Karabakh and renewed tensions with Azerbaijan. While the European Union-led negotiation process seems to have stalled since, Germany appears to have intensified its dialogue with Armenia, with recent visits of high-ranking German officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the President of the Federal Intelligence Service. Given its economic and political capital with both Armenia and Azerbaijan, how can Berlin play a greater role in supporting the journey of building a lasting peace? What are and should be Germany’s priorities in engaging with Armenia? This webinar, co-organized by the Candid Foundation and APRI Armenia, helps provide some answers to these questions.   Speakers: Leo Wigger, Associate Partner, Candid Foundation Dr. Stefan Meister, Head, Center for Order and Governance in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, German Council on Foreign Relations Dr. Sonja Schiffers, Director, Tbilisi Office–South Caucasus Region, Heinrich Böll Foundation Lara Setrakian, President, APRI Armenia  Moderator: Anahide Pilibossian, Vice President of Strategy and Development, APRI Armenia.
