At the Cyprus Forum APRI Armenia Examined Geopolitical Dynamics in the South Caucasus

From October 1–3, the Cyprus Forum convened political leaders, media representatives, academics, and civil society members from Cyprus and abroad to foster innovative approaches to key public policy challenges.

APRI Armenia Research Fellow Nvard Chalikyan spoke on the panel “Cyprus and the EuroMed Region: Diplomacy, Trade and Security in a Region of Shifting Balances.” APRI Armenia served as the knowledge partner for this panel.

Moderated by Petros Petrikkos (PhD Candidate in International Relations and European Studies at the University of Nicosia), the discussion featured, alongside Nvard Chalikyan, Michael Tatham, British High Commissioner to Cyprus; İlkay Demirdağ, Co-Founder of Energy Shift Capital; and Dorothée Schmid, Head of the Turkey–Middle East Program at the French think tank IFRI.

During the discussion, Nvard described the South Caucasus as a microcosm of geopolitics, where Russia’s withdrawal has created space for new dynamics. She also examined Turkey’s geopolitical ambitions in the South Caucasus, with a focus on its connectivity with Azerbaijan through Armenia, and the potential impact on the EuroMed region, especially for Cyprus and Greece. Nvard underlined the importance of strengthening Armenia’s multifaceted relations with Cyprus and Greece.

She also discussed Armenia’s foreign policy diversification and highlighted the increasing involvement of the European Union and the United States, as well as India and China, in the region.
