Sergei Melkonian
Research Fellow, APRI Armenia

Research Fellow. Sergei is also a visiting professor at Yerevan State University and the Russian-Armenian University. 

Before joining APRI Armenia, Sergei served as Assistant to the President of Armenia from 2020 to 2022 on foreign policy, covering post-Soviet countries and the Middle East. He  was a Research Fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies for four years, focusing on Israeli foreign and defense policy, as well as security dynamics in the Middle East. In 2018–2020, he was Head of the Eurasian and Middle Eastern Department at the Armenian Research and Development Institute, providing consultancy on Russian foreign policy and Middle East processes.

Sergei holds a PhD in History from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. He has written multiple academic papers for peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, analytical reports, and articles for think tanks, as well as op-eds for international platforms.

Field of expertise: Russia’s foreign policy, including relations with Armenia, Iran’s Middle East and South Caucasus policy and Armenia–Iran relations, Israeli foreign and defence policy.
